China National Petroleum Corporation, the parent company of PetroChina International Jabung Ltd. (PCJL), has praised the good cooperation in Indonesia’s energy sector for the last 20 years and ready for more business opportunities in the future.

On the sidelines of ASEAN Summit 2023 in Jakarta, Chairman of CNPC Dai Houliang and entourage visited the office of Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif and Chairman of SKK Migas, Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Operation, Dwi Soetjipto.

Dai visited SKK Migas’ office on Tuesday (5/9/2023) and was accompanied by Vice President of PetroChina Limited Wan Jun, CNPC Assistant General Manager and General Manager of International Division Jia Yong, CNODC President Director Chen Jintao and others.

In SKK Migas office, the entourage met with SKK Migas Chairman Dwi Soetjipto, Deputy of Business Support Rudi Satwiko, Deputy of Exploration, Development and Management of Working Areas Benny Lubiantara, Deputy of Exploitation Wahju Wibowo and others.

Dai expressed his gratitude for the strong cooperation that leads to good performance of PetroChina Indonesia company. As subsidiary of the CNPC, PCJL has operated Jabung Block since 2002 and was recently granted the Jabung contract extension period for 2023 – 2043.

Dai said that under the guidance of the "Belt and Road" initiative and the "Global Marine Fulcrum" concept, CNPC will expand cooperation in oil and gas exploration and development, new energy development and technological achievement sharing, actively fulfill corporate social responsibilities, and strengthen cooperation with trading partners, to promote the economic and social development of host countries. It is hoped that the two sides will further strengthen communication and cooperation, optimally utilize their respective advantages, and jointly promote the deepening and substantial energy cooperation between the two countries. Soetjipto said that CNPC is one of the world's major oil and gas producers and suppliers, and also an important partner of Indonesia's oil and gas industry. In the future, we will strive to provide services and support to CNPC, hoping to continue to deepen cooperation in the field of energy resources, continue to expand oil and gas investment, promote green and low-carbon development, and add vitality to high-quality development.

Dai also introduced some of CNPC's main business portfolios both domestically and overseas, including oil and gas service businesses. “Indonesia is one of the main strategic investment destinations of China in ASEAN region considering it has geographical advantages, rich and huge oil and gas resources, and other energy potentials. Moreover, CNPC is interested in continuing to explore the opportunities in basins, open areas, and other discovered blocks that was introduced by SKK Migas,” he said.

In this occasion, SKK Migas Chairman also congratulated PCJL for the good performance in Jabung Working Area, noting that currently Jabung is one of the top ten oil and gas producers in Indonesia and has increased its production in recent years.

On the same day, the CNPC delegations met with Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Arifin Tasrif, who was accompanied by Director of Upstream Oil and Gas Business Development Noor Arifin Muhammad , Director of Geothermal from the Directorate of New and Renewable Energy Harris Yahya and delegate. SKK Migas Chairman Soetjipto and Deputy of Exploitation Wahju also joined the meeting.

With the spirit of increasing the investment in oil and gas business, CNPC expressed their interest to expand their business coverage to include new and renewable energy. “CNPC fully supports the promotion of Indonesia’s energy transformation,” said Dai.

In this meeting, Arifin presented that Indonesia has huge investment potential in other energy and mineral industries, including nickel ore mining and smelting which is necessary to produce electric vehicle batteries. Furthermore, Indonesia is currently studying new energies such as solar photovoltaic, hydrogen and ammonia that can be used as fuel for marine transportation, and other energy cooperation opportunities in relatively new fields such as the development and utilization of geothermal energy.

Arifin said that Indonesia and China have a good foundation for cooperation in areas such as energy and mineral resources, and have achieved mutual benefit, win-win results and common development. At present, the pace of energy transformation in the world is accelerating, and energy security and sustainability are becoming increasingly crucial. Indonesia is accelerating the development of clean energy and formulating active measures to promote investment in new and renewable energy, especially in the field of transportation. It is hoped that in the future we will continue to have in-depth communication and exchanges with CNPC, continue to deepen cooperation in the fields of oil, gas and new energy, accelerate the improvement of oil and gas exploration and development and increase reserves and production capabilities, and actively expand the transformation of automobile electrification and the development and utilization of geothermal, solar, and hydrogen energy, etc. The cooperation in this area will help ensure the stable and safe supply of energy and the realization of carbon emission reduction goals and make new contributions to promoting the economic and social development of both countries.

As part of his courtesy visit, Dai conveyed his invitation to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources and his representatives to visit the CNPC headquarters to deepen cooperation in the energy industry, including oil and gas and other new and renewable energies.
