SKK Migas – PetroChina International Jabung Ltd. on Thursday (16/3) received an award from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry for our sustainable commitment on reclamation and watershed rehabilitation program in Jambi.

Environment Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar presented the award to SKK Migas Formality Senior Manager Farida and PetroChina Vice President Technical & Business Development Yu Jinbao during an awarding session in the ministry’s office in Jakarta.

The award was dedicated to PetroChina’s watershed rehabilitation program in Sei Londerang peatlands, which covered 473 hectares, and Muara Sabak Barat Forest, which covered an area of 40 hectares, in Tanjung Jabung Timur in Jambi. The rehabilitation program began in 2019 and was completed in 2022.

As the Production Sharing Contractor (PSC) and Jabung Block operator under the supervision of SKK Migas, PetroChina is committed to bring back the function of the forest once the exploration and exploitation activities finished.

“We take the land rehabilitation efforts seriously, because we realize this is our big responsibility towards the environment. PetroChina’s existence in Jabung must leave a good environmental legacy in years to come,” said Yu.

“The award from Environment and Forestry Ministry will boost our spirits to operate Jabung professionally and put the safety and environmental protection as our priority,” he added.

Previously, the watershed rehabilitation program in Sei Londerang peatlands and Muara Sabak Forest won the "Rehab DAS Excellent Achievement" award from SKK Migas during the 3rd International Convention and Indonesian Upstream Oil and Gas (ICIUOG) in Bali in November 2022. And currently, PetroChina is again carrying out a watershed rehabilitation program for another 34 hectares in Sei Londerang peatlands.

Apart from the rehabilitation efforts, PetroChina also actively participated in other environment programs to reduce the carbon emission. In February this year, PetroChina was among several PSCs took part in a tree-planting event in Yogyakarta.

SKK Migas Chairman Dwi Soetjipto, Head of Environmental Agency of the Sleman Regency Rita Probowati, and several representatives from PSCs symbolically planted several trees to start the program. PetroChina Communication Manager Ginandjar also attended the event. According to the plan, as much as 5,000 trees of Paraserianthes falcataria, a native Indonesian flora, would be gradually planted until March this year.

Through the program of “Upstream Oil and Gas Industry’s Tree Planting: One Tree, A Million Benefits” SKK Migas – PSCs have initiated several tree-planting activities aimed at reducing carbon emission. The trees are also expected to provide additional income for the local people around the area.

SKK Migas involves PSCs in the tree-planting program through their CSR budget. The regulator has gradually increased their tree-planting target from 1.2 million trees in 2021 to 1.7 million trees in 2022 and 2 million trees this year.

In November last year, SKK Migas and Production Sharing Contractors (PSCs) across Indonesia, including PetroChina, joined the government’s mangrove-planting program as an effort to reduce carbon emissions or zero emission. We planted almost 25,000 mangrove trees in 5-hectare area in Pangkal Babu Mangrove Tourism Park, Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency in Jambi Province.

The mangrove-planting event was attended by Dencio Renato Boele, PetroChina’s Vice President Human Resources and Relations; Andi Arie Pangeran, Spokesperson for SKK Migas Southern Sumatra Representative Office; Jambi Deputy Governor Abdullah Sani; Tanjung Jabung Barat Regent Anwar Sadat; and other officials.

Dencio said that PetroChina hoped the mangrove forest would give many benefits for the environment, as well as tourism. “Apart from supporting the tree-planting program, PetroChina also provides other development programs in this area, including the construction of 6-kilometer community road to create better access to reach the forest,” he said.

According to SKK Migas, the reduction of carbon emission program is one of strategic pillars for the Indonesia Oil & Gas (IOG) 4.0 agenda. Other main targets of IOG 4.0 are 1 million BOPD of oil and 12 BSCFD of gas production, and the optimization of upstream oil and gas activities.
