As the end of 2022 draws near, SKK Migas – PetroChina International Jabung Ltd. has started the field trial for CO2 Injection Huff & Puff in Gemah-6 oil field in Jabung Working Area in Tanjung Jabung Timur, Jambi Province. This field trial program kicked off on December 8 and would run for the next 30 days, targeting a total volume of 1,800 tons of CO2 injection.

The inauguration ceremony took place on the same day in Gemah Field and Betara Gas Plant complex in Tanjung Jabung Barat. The CO2 Injection Huff & Puff in Jabung was the second CO2 Injection in Indonesia following the similar project held in October in Jatibarang oil field, operated by Pertamina.

The CO2 Injection was the follow up of President Joko Widodo’s strategic plan in 2016 that expected to increase the oil and gas reserves up to 4.6 billion STB from 136 fields in Indonesia.

Head of SKK Migas Southern Sumatra Anggono Mahendrawan, Inspector with the Oil and Gas Directorate General Putu Suardana, SKK Migas Subdivision Head of Advanced Development Technology Arif Bagus Prasetyo, Field Manager Jabung John Halim, PetroChina Reservoir Engineering Manager Wicaksono and Project Leader PT Daqing Petroleum Services (the project contractor) Song Yan Nan attended the ceremony. Prior to the event, Sr. Reservoir Geoscientist Al Hafeez presented the project highlight to the attendees.

The CO2 Injection program in Jabung was fully supported by SKK Migas, Oil and Gas Directorate General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, PetroChina Management in Indonesia and Beijing Headquarters and Jabung partners. With reputable experiences in research and Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) implementation, PT Daqing Petroleum Services, which teams up with local company PT. Gemilang Buana Utama, will carry out this project.

“We really hope that the CO2 Injection Huff & Pufffield trial will run smoothly and record satisfactory results. The success of this program is essential as the reference for Jabung’s future works to increase production with CO2 technology,” said PetroChina President Director Qian Mingyang.

“The implementation of this technology will also boost our confidence to maximize Jabung potential during the contract extension period in the next 20 years,” Qian added.

As the Production Sharing Contractor (PSC) and the operator of Jabung Working Area since 2002, PetroChina has successfully booked stable average daily production above 50,000 BOEPD since 2006 up to now. Following the confirmation of Jabung’s contract extension period for 2023 – 2043, PetroChina has initiated various exploration, development, and production facility maintenance programs, including the CO2 Injection Huff & Puff in Gemah-6 oil well.

During the field trial period, a large amount of carbon dioxide will be injected to Simpang reservoir from Lower Talang Akar formation in Gemah-6 well. This field trial marks important milestone to measure the feasibility of Jabung reservoirs in general, as well as to collect important data for the future EOR programs with CO2 technology. As part of Indonesian upstream oil and gas industry, PetroChina is committed to support the government’s production target of 1 million BOPD of oil and 12 BSCFD of gas in 2030 through a series of exploration, production increase and field developments.

SKK Migas’s Deputy for Exploration, Development and Working Area Management, Benny Lubiantara, said that the CO2 Injection Huff & Puff in Gemah-6 was SKK Migas – PSCs effort to increase the oil and gas recovery from reservoir using CO2 injection method.

The CO2 Injection Huff & Puff in Gemah-6 was a part of CO2-EOR implementation in Gemah Field that potentially increase the national production and reserve. The CO2 Injection was also part of the Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) or Carbon Capture Utility Storage (CCUS) implementation that supported Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission (NZE) target in 2060.

According to Benny, SKK would continue encouraging PSCs to increase exploration and exploitation activities to achieve the 2030 target. “SKK Migas will keep monitoring PSCs’ exploration and exploitation efforts to increase the national oil and gas lifting,” Benny added.

PetroChina is the production sharing contractor (PSC) and the operator of Jabung Working Area under the monitoring and evaluation of SKK Migas. PetroChina operates Jabung with PT Pertamina Hulu Energi Jabung, PT GPI Jabung Indonesia, and PETRONAS Carigali (Jabung) Ltd as partners.
